This brief study analyses the metal composition of two hip and knee implants and compares it with the metal content as listed by the manufacturer. In addition to the metals reported, the knee implant contained bismuth and zirconium. The titanium hip implant had trace amounts of chromium; the periprosthetic plate and screws had trace levels of lanthanium, niobium and vanadium. The authors conclude: "This study therefore brings attention to the potential for metal allergens in implants that are otherwise considered hypoallergenic."
